I was born and raised in Chicago then moved around a bit living and working in South Florida, then to Washington DC where there is a very hip jazz scene as well as many classic R&B artists from the 60's soul, Stax & Classic R&B genres.
DC was a serious training ground for me where led a jazz quartet for about 10 years. I also played in various soul bands and saw a completely different side of music, life, gigs. I also led a soul band called the Mustangs Band, and transcribed horn parts for hundreds of songs and assembled a band of players who'd been playing the classic soul repertoire for their entire lives. It was an amazing experience. Our lead singer was Skip Mahoney, a DC legend. It was a serious lesson in 'old school' classic R&B and soul music.
The 'big jump' to New York City was in 1997 and during my first few months in nyc I found myself subbing at a big band rehearsal which led to playing in Charlie Persip's Supersound Band for 3 years. Sitting next to Todd Bashore (who is an amazing alto sax player, composer & arranger) was the single most inspiring and demoralizing experience I've ever had in my life! A true 'put up or shut up' experience. Since then it's been one long amazing journey of listening, shedding, playing, writing and learning.
